Combat Vision MMA conducted a Q&A interview with HAMMA fighter and Taekwondo world champion Sophie O’Brien as she prepares for her amateur bantamweight championship fight against Michelle Jones at Golden Ticket Promotions 6 on September 9th 2017.
You bounced back in fantastic style by knocking out Josie Blaber at Golden Ticket Promotions 5. How much of a relief was it for you to get your first amateur win and what did you think you showed in this fight.
“In the fight against Josie Blabber. I believe, I showed a lot of maturity, right from my composure of the cage walk, up until I finally got into the cage, this is down to Sean Martin and the HAMMA team (thanks Cath). I used my striking to my advantage, to control the fight, which proved to be successful. I have a lot of respect for Josie for coming to fight. She was a really nice, respectful woman. But, it was just another day at the office for me”
Looking ahead. You are fighting Michelle Jones at Golden Ticket Promotions for the Amateur Bantamweight title. At 18 years old with 2 amateur MMA fights under your belt. How ready do you feel for the jump to a title fight and how will you approach this fight in terms of preparation and strategy.
“I would like to thank Dan Cassell, the matchmaker of Golden Ticket fight promotions, for giving me the opportunity to fight for the title. Being given a title fight at such a young age and after only 18 months of MMA training is amazing and I can’t wait to take the opportunity and showcase what I am all about”
“I know the fight against Michelle Jones will be a tough one and if Michelle is reading this, let’s put on a show! This fight will be interesting to watch and I hope to think that it will actually inspire more women to get into MMA. I’m ready for this fight, respect to Michelle P Bear Jones”
Lastly, what does 2017 have in store for Sophie O’Brien.
“About a month ago, I was fortunate enough to have been signed by Heavy Duty Fight management under Carl Messen. I was honoured to have been given such a big opportunity which will now allow me to try and be the best I can be. I feel as though the support that I will receive, will be fantastic and I can’t wait to see what the future holds”
“I hope that by the time 2017 is out, that I will have put on a good performance against Michelle Jones at GTFP 6 and I will have done enough to win my 1st title in MMA. Not only is 2017 big for me in MMA, but also in my education. I will be starting Liverpool John Moores University, to study Sport and Exercises Science which I’m looking forward to”
